On ABC News, in a cloying voice:
In Zimbabwe, we arrived to the place Cecil called home ….
Are we really now so shallow that the nightly news sounds like a Disney movie? A reminder, in case ABC News has forgotten: Cecil was a wild animal, a predator of the species that regularly hunts and kills humans in Zimbabwe. There is nothing to mourn here except perhaps the professional character of the guides on this hunt. The official jackassery displayed by the Zimbabwean parks panjandrum is entirely expected. (Which is just another reason to be sure that your PH has crossed every t and dotted every I in triplicate, triple-checked it all, and placed a copy into a safe-deposit box in the nearest non-Zimbabwean bank.)
Also, the hazard to Cecil's cubs is from other lions who will not tolerate another male's cubs in what is now their domain. That's the way lions are: Nasty, murderous, remorseless beasts. The worst behavior of our worst criminals is regular business in the wild.
